Graduate Degrees
The Department of Physics at IUPUI offers graduate
programs leading to Purdue University Master of Scicence (M.S.) and
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. The Department has a flexible
program of graduate study that can easily accommodate students with a
wide variety of goals and backgrounds.
The general requirements for both degrees include
admission to regular graduate student status, completion of an English
requirement, a passing score on the Physics Qualifying Examination, and
satisfactory completion of an approved plan of study. The English
requirement for native English speakers is satisfied by having a
minimum grade of B in an undergraduate English composition course.
Non-native speakers of English must obtain a minimum score of 550 on
the TOEFL.
The Qualifying Exam is administered throughout the
Purdue graduate system and must be taken, at the latest, after
completing the introductory graduate courses. Two attempts are
permitted to obtain a passing grade. A free attempt is granted to the
student upon first enrolling in the Department.
The student should talk with the faculty members during
his or her first semester, and choose an adviser as soon as possible.
The student's plan of study is determined in cooperation with the
adviser, and a committee which is approved by the department.
The M.S. degree requires satisfactory completion of 30
credit hours of course work at the 500 and 600 levels. Twenty-four
credits must be in physics or in approved substitute courses relevant
to the student's research plan. For example some courses could be in
biophysics, chemistry, computer science, or engineering. Six of the
required hours are obtained through research work. Another six credit
hours of the total of 30 must be earned in mathematics, which may be
substituted by certain physics or computer science courses. A minimum
GPA of 2.8/4.0 must be maintained. The M. S. degree has both thesis and
non-thesis options.
For the Ph.D. degree, a total of 90 credit hours are
required, which include successfully completing a core group of physics
courses, completing speciality courses approved by the student's
graduate committee. A minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 is required. The students
should pass the Qualifying Examination at the Ph. D. level, establish a
Ph.D. Committee. Then a formal “Plan of Study” should be filed. The
students should Pass the Ph. D. Preliminary Examination based upon the
research planned. The Preliminary Examination must precede the final
thesis defense by a minimum of one year. As an integral part of the
work toward the Ph.D. degree, the student is expected to attend the
general departmental seminar regularly and special seminars in his/her
specialty.Once the core courses are mostly completed and the Qualifying
Examination passed, the student may be certified. A thesis should be
completed based upon his/her research,a departmental seminar over
his/her research work should be presented. A final oral examination
over the thesis must be scheduled and passed.
